Initially concentrating solely on serving dim sum, Dim Sum Town has rapidly emerged as the go-to spot for Uttara locals in search of delectable dim sum options. Jumshadur Rahman, the CEO of Dim Sum Town, explained his vision, saying: "My goal was to bring in a variety of dim sums, and create a space that is specifically known for dim sums."
Through this dedicated approach, Dim Sum Town has successfully earned a reputation among residents as the ultimate destination for savouring an array of exquisite dim sum delicacies.
Food
The Assorted Dim Sum Platter features a combination of three prawn siu mai and three chicken siu mai, totalling six pieces. While both prawn and chicken selections were meticulously chosen for their umami-rich qualities, the cooking process left the dim sum slightly dry, detracting from their overall appeal. The saving grace lies in the availability of four distinct sauces: peanut, chili oil, soy, and sweet chilli, into which you can dip these delectable morsels.
Sesame oil is skillfully infused into the nori-wrapped prawn siu mai, featuring a blend of carrot, prawn paste, nori sheets, and a subtle, almost imperceptible hint of wasabi. If you have a penchant for seaweed and desire a touch of heat in your dim sum, the nori wrap provides an excellent choice. Its resemblance to sushi immediately comes to mind, and it is undeniably of superior quality, although it may be an acquired taste for some.
Another crowd-pleaser is the steamed wonton with chilli oil, which perfectly complements the delicate preparation of the wontons. Each bite of these wontons offers a remarkable culinary experience, thanks to the fiery kick provided by the chilli oil, elevating the dish to a resounding success.
Following that, we delved into general tsao's chicken, which had been marinated in a mixture of hoisin sauce, sesame, sesame seeds, and soy sauce, creating a tangy symphony of flavours on the palate and a savoury delight to savour. It paired exceptionally well with the fried rice.
On a quest for comfort food, we sampled the beef noodle soup, consisting of egg noodles, beef broth, and vegetables. Unfortunately, the broth turned out to be excessively salty, and the noodles had a somewhat slimy texture that made the dish less enjoyable to consume.
Dim Sum Town offers a price range spanning from Tk250 to Tk1095.
Ambience
Dim Sum Town in Uttara features elegant hardwood flooring that adds a touch of refinement to the ambiance. To the side, there's a concealed mocktail bar, and the neon pink signboard radiates a lively luminescence, illuminating the area with vibrancy.
The seating setup is a charming mixture of comfortable soft pink, off-white, and blue chairs.
Challenges
Dim Sum Town opened in November 2022, effectively introducing and popularizing dim sum in the area. Nevertheless, Rahman asserts that residents in Uttara are somewhat less inclined to part with their money compared to their counterparts in Banani.
Rahman explains, now, restaurants in Uttara have started acknowledging dim sum as an appetizer. “Initially, I intended to establish this restaurant in Banani, where people tend to be more willing to spend their money."
It was essential to instil confidence in the people of Uttara that dining out within the vicinity was a worthwhile choice. Rahman notes: "We had to persuade them that the money spent on travelling to Banani could be better utilized right here in Uttara."
Remarkably, the restaurant achieved its break-even point in just one month of operation, thanks to a strong influx of customers and positive feedback. Rahman proudly states: "We reached the break-even point within a month because of the steady flow of customers and their positive response."
Although there was a slight dip in sales last week, there are promising indications of a recovery. Rahman affirms: "Our sales experienced a 10–15% decline last week, but they have begun to rebound."
Notably, inflationary price increases have not been implemented, and they won't be unless absolutely necessary.
