Commerce Minister Tipu Munshi has given a two-day ultimatum to the traders and said that if the price of onion does not decrease within this period, he will import onion from outside Bangladesh.
He told this to journalists when he arrived in Rangpur on a two-day visit on Friday.
The minister said that there was no reason for the price of onion to increase so much during the peak season.
Regarding the control of daily necessities, especially in the kitchen market, the minister said: “It is not my responsibility. We don't control everything in the kitchen market, there are different ministries for that. But overall, the situation is not too bad. The market fluctuates, sometimes the price of vegetables increases and then later decreases.”
He said that there was little trouble only with onion and sugar. He expressed hope that it will come under control.
Unscrupulous traders are taking advantage of the rise and fall in global sugar prices due to various reasons including the rise in the value of dollar. Apart from this, the price of imported goods has increased slightly due to the increase in dollar value.
He added that everyone had to consider the situation where commodity prices have risen all over the world. “We must all work together to combat the global recession,” he added.
