In Memoriam: Mubarak Ali, managing director, Olympic Industries

It is with a heavy heart that we bid farewell to a remarkable business leader and a compassionate human being who has been laid to eternal rest.

Mubarak Bhai, as he was widely known, possessed a larger-than-life personality that made him stand out in social interactions and business dealings. Despite his calm and soft-spoken nature, he was a deep thinker who skillfully directed his business conglomerate for four decades with a sterling reputation.

I had the privilege of first meeting Mubarak Bhai socially nearly 27 years ago, which eventually turned into a banker-customer relationship. I distinctly remember his unique presentation of his business case, where he would explain the purpose and how the bank facility would be used.

He would then go on to detail how the revenue stream would liquidate the debt and at what period of time. This exceptional talent distinguished him in the banking community.

Mubarak Bhai was known for hosting private dinners that no one would want to miss. From the invitation card to the confirmation calls, and his personal call to reaffirm, everything was done with precision. Upon arrival, specially attired attendants greeted guests and Mubarak Bhai and his daughter Nasreen would personally welcome them.

The display of food was sumptuous with exotic details, and the anecdotes he narrated during the dinner were full of wits and wisdom. He would speak almost in a whisper, with softness, while urging guests not to leave early. It was an experience that left an indelible mark on everyone.

Mubarak Bhai once shared his views on succession planning, arguing that in family businesses, successors should not be picked abruptly. Professional skills should take priority, as family members cannot supervise other professionals without the necessary knowledge.

He put his belief into practice by integrating his grandson, Tanveer, into the business and relentlessly coaching and mentoring him. Today, Tanveer is a testament to Mubarak Bhai's values and dedication.

When we were informed of Mubarak Bhai's passing, we visited his Gulshan house to express our condolences. As we were leaving, his daughter Nasreen stopped us to pass on a gift box that Mubarak Bhai had wanted to give to us and a few others.

We were spellbound and had tears in our eyes, knowing that even death could not take away his act of friendship and empathy. We were overwhelmed, not by what we got in the box but by what we had lost in the person who gave it to us.

Mubarak Bhai's death is a loss to all who knew him, but his legacy will live on. Although he may be absent from his home and business, his footprint will remain visible in these places for many years to come.

Let us mourn his passing and celebrate the extraordinary life he led.
