Stocks hit second-highest turnover in 2022 after single-day break

The stock market went downhill yesterday after turnovers increased for six consecutive days as the news broke about the premier bourse’s managing director resigning. 

But on Thursday, August 25, Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE) not only rebounded but also hit this year's second highest turnover as investors remained active on sector-wise issues.

Turnover, an important indicator of the market, rose to Tk1,777.5 crore on the country's premier bourse which was Tk1,133.7 crore in the previous session of the week, meaning it is Tk643.74 crore more than the previous working day.

The highest turnover this year to date was on January 11, the transaction was Tk1,976.9 crore.

According to DSE, DSEX on Thursday increased by 74.72 points or 1.18% to 6355.07 points, which is the highest since July 12. 

On that day, the index was 6,355.48 points.

Among the other indices of DSE, the Shariah index rose by 11 points or 0.79% to 1390.61 points and the DSE30 index rose by 23.66 points or 1.05% to 2267.35 points.

Shares and unit prices of 379 companies were traded on DSE on Thursday, out of which 234 have increased. 

The shares and unit prices of 54 companies fell while the remaining 91 companies witnessed no price movement.

Shares on CSE also increased

The overall index CASPI of Chittagong Stock Exchange (CSE), the country's second-largest stock market, increased by 139.03 points or 0.75% to 18,642.96 points.

Among the 312 companies that changed hands in CSE on Thursday, stocks of 166 companies advanced, 70 retreated, and the remaining 76 did not show any price movement.

Shares and units worth Tk36.2 crore were traded in CSE on the last working day of the week.

The CASPI, the all-share price index of the bourse in the port city, edged up 139 points, or 0.75%, to close at 18,642.

DSE generated the highest revenue in 11 years

Due to a surge in turnover in the country’s premier bourse during the period of January to June, the government's revenue earnings hit an 11-year high in FY22.

The government’s revenue collection from the DSE rose by 8.40% or Tk24.43 crore in FY22 compared with FY21.

According to DSE data, in FY22 the total transaction in the 240 working days was more than Tk3,18,720 crore, which was the highest revenue collection since FY12. 

DSE earlier paid taxes worth Tk447 crore in FY11– the highest in its history, when the market witnessed a ‘bubble-bust’ before crashing.

According to DSE data, the National Board of Revenue (NBR) in FY22 collected Tk290.88 crore in tax, including the tax on turnover and tax on sponsor directors’ share sales, against Tk266.44 crore in FY21.

In FY22, the government generated Tk218 crore in tax on turnover, while the amount was Tk180 crore in FY21.
