Google’s Kormo Jobs shuts down

Global tech giant Google's jobs and career development service Kormo Jobs has stopped operations since June 30 of this year, according to its official website.

However, the platform did not state any specific reason for the closure of its operations.

Apart from Bangladesh, the platform also had operations in India and Indonesia and had built a strong network of about 4.5 million job seekers across the nations, until the service was shut down last month.

The app used to work like Microsoft's LinkedIn, India's Naukri or Bangladesh's BdJobs, as a platform for professionals, where a user first creates a profile and CV with all the required information.

Then the job seekers applied for the preferred job through the network and employers can easily select the suitable candidate by looking at the profile.

Kormo Jobs began operations in Bangladesh as an emerging market in 2018, quickly becoming popular amongst blue-collared job seekers.

The app was launched in Indonesia in March 2019 and India in August 2020 following its success in Bangladesh.

Google introduced its Kormo Jobs Android app to India in 2020 by rebranding ‘Jobs’ that was introduced in 2019 as part of Google Pay to connect job seekers with opportunities in industries like on-demand businesses, retail and hospitality all across India.

The android phone-based app allowed jobseekers to open accounts and find jobs of their interest and enabled employers to post job ads on the platform

According to the platform, one of its aims was to solve recruitment problems for both employers and job seekers and had undertaken several partnerships to develop local job seekers.

Bongo, one of the largest video streaming platforms in Bangladesh, had previously signed an agreement with Kormo Jobs, to provide job opportunities and career development assistance to job seekers through both the apps.

The platform also partnered with Banglalink to set up dedicated Kormo Jobs kiosks in selected Banglalink outlets, where Kormo representatives assisted job-seekers in finding employment opportunities and accessing learning resources through its app.

As a strategic partner of Kormo Jobs, Banglalink had also worked with Kormo Jobs to jointly hold virtual career development sessions, job fairs and other events aimed at boosting youth employment.
