As many as 50 lakhs low-income families will receive 30kg of rice as food assistance at an increased rate of Tk15 per kg.
Finance Minister AHM Mustafa Kamal made the announcement during the budget session for the 2022-2023 fiscal year at the Parliament on Thursday.
Previously during the pandemic as many as 70,56,000 families received 30kg of rice at Tk10 per kilogram.
The minister said that the government will continue the Open Market Sales (OMS) programme for the FY2022-23.
He added that with a goal to make food available for the low income people, the government has also been supplying rice and flour at subsidized prices.
Moreover, the government is working to contain the price spiral of rice through the OMS effort.
According to the minister the government is distributing around 5 lakh metric tons of rice and 5.09 lakh metric tons of wheat flour in the current fiscal year.
A significant portion of the poor people have been brought under social safety nets, he added.
