E-commerce giant Amazon has paid value added tax (VAT) for the first time in Bangladesh.
The tech-giant is the third foreign registered company to pay VAT following Facebook and Google.
The company submitted Tk53 lakh VAT to the Dhaka South VAT Commissionerate on Thursday, Additional Commissioner of Dhaka South VAT Commissionerate Promila Sarkar told Dhaka Tribune.
Earlier on May 27, Amazon obtained a business identification number (BIN) from the National Board of Revenue (NBR), allowing it to submit returns on the total turnover at the end of each year through a local consultant or online from their country.
Social networking giant Facebook was the first foreign company to pay VAT in Bangladesh on July 29. It paid Tk2.44 crore in VAT a month after its registration with the NBR.
Popular search engine Google on August 5, was the second big tech to pay Tk2.3 crore in VAT to the NBR after Facebook.
