The VAT Intelligence Directorate of the National Board of Revenue have raided the Lakeshore Hotel Gulshan on charges of VAT evasion.
During the raid, a total of 349 bottles of illegal liquor were seized from the upscale hotel's bar, according to a press release.
The VAT Intelligence team found discrepancies between the monthly VAT returns submitted by the hotel in 2019 and original sales documents collected from the hotel. The documents collected from the hotel showed the hotel authority collected VAT from its clients but did not submit it to the government.
Lakeshore have not filed any VAT returns since January. According to the law, the returns of each month must be submitted by the 15th of the next month.
Action will be taken in accordance with the VAT Act and other laws upon further investigation, the press release said.
The raid was conducted by the VAT Intelligence Directorate Deputy Director Nazmunnahar Kaiser. She was assisted by a RAB patrol team.
