Tangail youth become solvent with duck farming

A returned expatriate youth in Tangail became solvent by farming ducks in a beel area there. 

Currently, the young man, Aminur Rahman, earns Tk100,000 per month on average. 

He startedthe farmingwith 1,000 ducklings and Tk35,000 investmentnear Kamarnaoganbeel at his village in Delduarupazila of the district, Fazilhati.

The ducks roam on the water of beel in rainy season and they are shifted to other places when the beel becomes empty, especially in winter.

Aminur's mobile farm have inspired others to be self-sufficient with fruitful ideas even in unfavourable situations.

"Duck farming with cordial efforts can bring more money than going abroad," said Aminur.

"Many of my friends and neighbors come to me for tips," he added. 

He said duck farming was a very profitable business, and government support is needed in the promising sector for a further boost, he added.

"10 years ago, I was involved in wheat trading. Every day I used to buy a duckling from my profits," he said and said that it was his hobby back then.

This way Aminur managed  165 ducks and reared them. He became used to making money from the farming and saved a good amount to goto Saudi Arabia. 

"I worked in the country for a few years and later shifted to Singapore, but I realized duck farming was more profitable than working abroad," he said, adding that he came back and restarted farming.

"But this time its different. I have takenduck farming as my professionand giving my best efforts here,"he said.

Aminur rears Zindangi and Khaki Kembelvariety of duck. He invested a nominal amount for making the farm house. Most of the time the ducks roam in beel and they pass little time in the house.

As a result, the farming cost is nominal, he informed.

Rearing the ducks for three to four months, he gets 300-350 eggs and earns about Tk4,000 per day on an average.

Farming ducks, in waterbodies, were more profitable, believes Aminur and said he was now looking for a permanent place.

Delduarupazila Veterinary Surgeon Dr Mohammad Ali said Aminur's duck farming was an inspiration for others.

Obviously it is a great initiative, he added.

The surgeon, however, said for better results from duck farming, the entrepreneur should take regular advices from experts.
