Demanding appointment letters, the prime-mover-trailer operators continued their work stoppage for the second consecutive day on Thursday.
Shipment of export-import containers between Chittagong port and 19 private inland container depots (ICDs) remained suspended due to the strike.
The workers belonging to Chittagong Prime Mover Trailer Sramik Union began the strike from 9:00am on Wednesday.
According to Bangladesh Inland Container Depot Association (BICDA), there are 8,000 prime movers-trailers across the country.
Of them, 850 prime movers-trailer operators at 19 depots have gone for the work abstention programme.
Talking to Dhaka Tribune, Humayun Kabir, former general secretary of Chittagong Prime Mover Trailer Sramik Union said that a negotiation meeting was held between the BICDA and the striking workers.
“However, the meeting ended without any decision. Therefore, the workers are continuing their strike,” he said.
Terming the strike as a wildcat one, Ruhul Amin Shikder, secretary of Bangladesh Inland Container Depot Association (BICDA) told Dhaka Tribune that the workers went for the strike without giving any prior notice.
“We have no problem with giving appointment letters. But he workers are demanding a salary hike.” said the BICDA Secretary, adding that the strike would have an adverse impact on the trade and commerce of the country.
