GP CEO: Will face trouble without NOC, new SIM allotment

Grameenphone (GP) will face great problems if the no objection certificate (NOC) clearance and new number allotment approval is not settled within two to six weeks.

The telecommunication operator's newly appointed Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Yasir Azman made the announcement in a media briefing on Monday.

He said the operator will not be able to provide any more new SIM cards after two weeks and the network experience might also witness a major setback within four to six weeks.

On July 17, 2019, the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) decided to restrict permission for various services, imports, and infrastructure development by mobile phone operators Grameenphone and Robi for non-payment of their dues.

The mobile operators have to obtain NOCs before launching any package for users, importing radio equipment, and building new towers from the regulator.

After auditing the two companies, the BTRC in 2016 claimed Tk12,579.95 crore from market leader GP and Tk867.23 crore from Robi in taxes, and late fees that accumulated over the years.
