The prices of onion and sugar remained high in the capital's kitchen markets over the week ending on Saturday.
Traders said that the wholesale price of refined and imported sugar went up as the refiners raised the mill gate price of the item.
Visiting kitchen markets in the city, onion was found selling at varying prices at different markets.
At Rampura bazar and Madhubagh bazar, onions imported from India were selling for Tk50 per kg and local onions for Tk60per kg while in Karwan Bazar it was found selling for Tk50-55 per kg.
Wholesale prices of imported onion is Tk46 while that of local variety is Tk50.
A Rampura-based retailer, Abbas Hawladar, said that now onion prices hovered around Tk50 per kg but in some areas it was Tk2 to Tk5 more.
"Though we don’t know the actual reason why the price increased, wholesalers and traders told us it increased because of supply shortage," said a retailer, Md Ibrahim, who came to Karwan Bazar to buy wholesale products.
Md Milon, a trader at Karwan Bazar, said after Eid-ul-Azha supply of onion decreased because of floods in India.
Trading Corporation of Bangladesh (TCB) data also showed the price hikes.
Upward sugar price
The price of sugar also increased. Over the week it increased by Tk2 per kg. The refined sugar was selling for Tk60-65 per kg. Its wholesale price is now around Tk56 per kg, which was earlier which Tk50. The locally produced sugar was selling for Tk 70 per kg.
"Sugar price has remained high since after Eid-ul-Azha," said retailer Abbas Hawladar.
Vegetable prices go up
The prices of some vegetables increased by up to Tk5. Bitter gourds sold for Tk80 per kg, which was Tk60 a week ago. Tomato sold at Tk100-120 per kg, which was earlier Tk80. The price of green chilli remained unchanged at Tk 80-100 per kg on the day.
The prices of broiler chicken fell by Tk5 a kg, selling for Tk120-130, while Pakistani cock for Tk250 and the locally bred hens for Tk500 per kg.
The prices of garlic imported from China decreased, retailing at Tk170-180 per kg while its local variety was selling for Tk160-180.
Local ginger sold at Tk130-140 and the imported one Tk160-180 per kg.
Price of papaya was Tk 25-30 and that of cucumber Tk50-60 per kg.
The price of hen eggs decreased, selling for Tk100 a dozen (12 pieces) while duck egg for Tk150-152 a dozen. Okra was selling for Tk50, potol for Tk50 and borboti for Tk80 per kg while pumpkin sold for Tk70-80 per piece.
Lemon was found selling for Tk25-30 per four pieces, carrot for Tk60, cucumber for Tk60 and potato for Tk20-25 per kg.
The prices of Hilsha fish decreased due to huge supply, selling for Tk750-800 per piece (1kg), which was Tk1,000 a week ago.
Price of Rui fish increased, selling at Tk310-320 per kg which was Tk290-280 a week ago.
