The visiting UK trade envoy to Bangladesh Rushanara Ali on Monday said the United Kingdom wants to heavily invest in the infrastructure of Bangladesh.
Speaking to UNB on Monday, the British prime minister’s trade envoy said the next generation of British Bangladeshis can make a difference with their cemented ties with Bangladesh.
“Obviously, infrastructure is a big area for investment,” she said.
She listed the energy sector, especially renewable energy, and technological cooperation, education, and skill sharing as some potential areas of cooperation.
“You’ve a very young population increasingly educated. You’re really getting involved in developing new enterprises,” Rushanara said mentioning that the two countries can do a lot to do together.
British High Commissioner to Dhaka Alison Blake was, among others, present during Rushanara’s interview with a select group of media.
The British trade envoy said that railways, roads, bridges and airports require investment and partnering with different countries can enable Bangladesh to achieve its ambition of becoming a middle-income country.
She stressed that these are the basic building blocks of economic development, emphasizing on “inclusive development” in Bangladesh.
Talking about investment barriers, she said further improvement in business climate would mean more investors coming to Bangladesh and not just from the UK.
The trade envoy, who is now here on her third visit to Bangladesh representing the British prime minister, said: “Businesses go to countries where the environment is conducive to investing and operating. You all know this very well.”
She further emphasized on producing high-value garment products and tech business saying there is real potential for partnership between Bangladesh and the UK in those sectors.
