Tofail: Bangladesh RMG products not getting real prices

Readymade garment (RMG) products from Bangladesh are not getting “real prices” in the international market, Commerce Minister Tofail Ahmed has observed. “We are not getting the real price. Product prices have been reduced after the 2013 Rana Plaza collapse,” he said without elaborating at a workshop in Dhaka on Tuesday. “That is the main problem.” Bangladesh is the second largest exporter of RMG products after China. A series of accidents and allegations of low pay have plagued the sector. The Rana Plaza collapse, killing more than 1,100 people, brought forth the issue of workplace safety at RMG factories. Bangladesh has since made efforts to improve safety but last September's fire at a Tongi packaging factory showed that more needed to be done. Minister Tofail said: “Though investors, entrepreneurs spend a lot of money in the garment industry, they are not getting the real price.”
