NBR chair praises taxpayers’ response during VAT week

He was addressing the concluding ceremony of the event at Bashundhara City Mall in Dhaka yesterday.
The function was also addressed by NBR Member (VAT policy) Jahangir Hossain, Excise and VAT Commissioner Dhaka (South) Kazi Mustafizur Rahman and Bashundhara City In-charge T I M Latiful Islam.
Bashundhara City Shop Owners Union President MA Hannan Azad presided over the programme.
Speakers said the recent NBR initiatives have been able to yield good results in motivating people to pay taxes.
After the event, the NBR Chairman visited different shops at the Bashundhara City and exchanged views with businessmen.
He saw for himself the operation of the newly set up electric cash register devices at different shops of the mall.
In efforts to raise awareness among students on tax payment, the NBR organised a “VAT Education Forum” during the week.
Students from the different universities including University of Dhaka, Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) participated in the event event.
The participants placed nine-point recommendations at the event for reforming and modernisation of VAT collection system.
NBR chairman said the system is being modernised and people can now pay VAT online without hassles.
Earlier, Finance Minister AMA Muhith said despite the country has a millions of capable people to pay taxes, only 50,000 of them are registered with the NBR.
The NBR observed VAT-week from December 09 to 15 across the country and observed VAT day for first time on December 10.
