Egyptian zoo accused of passing off donkey as zebra

Mahmoud Sarhan was visiting Cairo’s International Garden Municipal Park when he noticed the zebras seemed, different.

He posted some photos on Facebook that quickly went viral.

The picture showed a donkey painted as a zebra, aside from its pointy ears and its small size, there were also black smudges on its face.

Experts were baffled at the matter. A vet was contacted by the local news group who stated that a zebra's snout is black, while its stripes are more consistent and parallel.

The enclosure contained two animals and both had been painted, said Sarhan.

When a local radio station contacted Mohamed Sultan, the zoo director; he asserted that the animals were not fake.

This is not the first time that a zoo has been accused of trying to fool its audience. A similar incident occurred where the zoo exhibited blown up plastic penguins in Guangxi province in 2017. A zoo in Gaza painted to donkeys to look like zebras in 2009 and yet another zoo put up display of a donkey painted in zebra prints in Gaza in 2012 because of shortage of animals.
