A poacher was recently attacked and devoured by a pride of lions in South Africa.
The fatal assault took place close to Kruger National Park, one of Africa’s largest game reserves and home to lions, leopards, rhinos, elephants and buffaloes, reports Canadian media outlet National Post.
The lions left behind only his head and little of his body, South African police said on Monday.
“They ate his body, nearly all of it, and just left his head and some remains,” Limpopo police spokesman Moatshe Ngoepe said. A loaded hunting rifle was found beside the body.
The man is yet to be identified.
Ngoepe told the Evening Standard: “The process of identifying this body has already commenced and it might be made easier as his head was amongst the remains found at the scene.”
According to African Wildlife Foundation, the lion population has been in severe decline in Africa and decreased by 43% in the last 21 years. Poachers are a part of the problem.
In January 2017, poachers mutilated the bodies of three male lions after feeding them poisoned meat. They decapitated the lions and cut off their paws. Police confirmed that the lions had been poisoned.
