Bangladesh crushed Maldives by 20-9 points to emerge as the unbeaten champions in the Citycell SABA 3-on-3 Basketball at the Dhanmondi Basketball Gymnasium yesterday.
Bangladesh, who beat Nepal, Sri Lanka and Bhutan on Tuesday, required the win to lift the title as Rasheduzzaman, Mithun Biswas, Shamuzzman Khan Shoyeb and Khaled Mahmud Akash appeared as an unbeatable unit against Maldives. Wasif Ali and the Khairul Alam Farhad were the coach and the manager respectively. Bangladesh won the SABA Basketball Championship last September and all the current players were part of the champion team.
Mithun Biswas was buoyant with the achievement. “We were confident that we will lift the title and we worked hard, with two consecutive SABA titles we proved that Bangladesh basketball has progressed in the recent days, we want to achieve more and hope the federation and the government take the required steps’ said the tall cager.
Sri Lanka finished runners-up, Nepal third, Bhutan fourth while Maldives, who won the Fair Play Trophy, finished last in the five-team event.
Advocate Qamrul Islam, the minister of food ministry distributed the prizes as the chief guest. Syed Shahed Reza, the secretary general of Bangladesh Olympic Association was the special guest. Dr Mostafa Jalal Mohiuddin, the president of Bangladesh Basketball Federation, AK Sarker, the general secretary and Taslim Ahmed. Head of Corporate Communications & PR of Citycell was also present on the occasion.
