Miscreants opened fire on police in the port city of Chittagong Thursday evening after the review petition Quader Molla's execution was dismissed.
A policeman was shot on his head during this time, an official said. He was taken to Chittagong Medical College Hospital in a critical condition.
About 12 youths appeared and opened fire when Doublemooring police were out on regular patrol in Beparipara at around 6:30am, police said.
Police were compelled to open fire, Doublemooring police Officer-in-Charge Motiul Islam said. “Sub Inspector Saiful Islam was shot on his head.”
The police official could not ascertain the identity of the attackers.
The incident took place during a nationwide blockade programme of the BNP-led opposition 18-party alliance.
Two policemen were injured when crude bombs were blasted in the city's Rahattarpul area, Panchlaish circle Assistant Commissioner Shah Mohammad Abdur Raouf said.
The two policemen were taken to Chittagong Police Line Hospital, he said. However, the identities of the policemen could not be obtained.
7 Shibir men arrested from Sitakunda, training camps busted
Seven activists of the Islami Chhatra Shibir, student affiliate of the Jamaat-e-Islami, were arrested from Sitakunda upazila, Chittagong. Three training camps were busted.
Sitakunda OC SM Badiuzzaman said the arrests were made over cases regarding recent violence during hartals and blocakdes of the opposition.
Three training camps were busted in the upazila, he added. Huge amount of leaflets, Zihadi books and other materials were seized from those camps.
Earlier in the day, the Supreme Court dismissed the review petition on the execution of Jamaat leader Abdul Quader Molla.
