The Rest of the World team defeated the European side by 18.5 points to 9.5 in the Rover Cup Golf Tournament 2017, organised by Dhaka Dogs Golf Group. The 14th edition of the tournament, sponsored by Mutual Trust Bank, was fought out between the rival teams at Kurmitola Golf Club Saturday. The ROW captain Gary Lye received the Rover Cup on behalf of his winning team and thanked all players, the sponsor and KGC staff for making this a highly enjoyable event.
The Dogs (Dhaka Oddballs Golf Society) is a “virtual club” within KGC and started in the year 2000. It has over 50 active members and a following of several hundred former Dogs golfers worldwide. The members cover most countries and many different cultural and working backgrounds from diplomats to school teachers.
The Dogs gather every Saturday at KGC for its weekly medal golf game but last Saturday was very special with the Rover Cup being played in the same format and spirit as the famous Ryder Cup (Europe v USA). The only difference is Dogs play the whole event in one day condensing a major tournament into 27-holes comprising a paired team event of nine-holes Greensomes (all hit and then select best drive and then alternate hits to hole out); nine-holes of Four Ball Better Ball with the best score of the pair being the team score. And finally single matches over nine-holes. Team Europe and ROW have now each won the Rover Cup seven times.
