Bangladesh U-18 national team kicked off the Saff U-18 Championship 2019 campaign with a dominating 3-0 victory over Sri Lanka in the inaugural Group B match at the at APF Stadium in Kathmundu, Nepal Saturday.

English coach Andrew Turner’s side went ahead very early in the game when defender Mohammad Tanbir Hossain headed home in a cross in the first minute that hit the side post before entering into the net.

The junior Bangladesh boys added two more goals in the second half.

Fahim Morshed doubled the lead in the 77th minute with a bullet effort from outside the box before Foysal Ahmed Fahim extended the lead with an angular shot from the left side of the box in the 86th minute.

“The first game in any competition is always hard as every team wants to start with a win. We worked hard and had the right foot at the end. We deserved the win but obviously there are still lots to improve,” said Turner after the match.

Bangladesh also made an unforgettable start in the last edition of the competition when they overcame a three-goal deficit of the first half to eventually snatch a dramatic 4-3 win over India two years ago.

Bangladesh finished that campaign as runners-up.

Bangladesh will take on India in their second and last group match Monday.
