Gary Lineker, Frank Lampard, Steven Gerrard, Paul Scholes and Rio Ferdinand tried their hands at cricket as the Ashes frenzy builds up

The Ashes is regarded as among the most important of events in the sporting calendar for England and Australia. It has also produced some of the most enthralling cricket Test matches of all time.

Naturally, the buildup to an Ashes series, while not comparable to the actual on-field action, tends to be quite interesting on its own and one that draws in individuals from other sports too.

In a video uploaded by BT Sport on their Twitter handle, England footballing legends – Rio Ferdinand, Paul Scholes, Frank Lampard, Gary Lineker and Steven Gerrard have been pictured trying their hand at the gentleman’s game in the studio.

In the video, Chelsea legend Lampard welcomes England’s third highest goalscorer Lineker with a steep bouncer and then gets him on the third delivery with a yorker. After that, Gerrard-Scholes relive their on-field rivalry and quite clearly, the former United star comes up on top.

Lampard comes in as the third batsman, only to be yorked by Scholes after a couple of deliveries. Gerrard is the last one to bat in the video, and rather hilariously, the former Liverpool skipper gets one in the face from former England team-mate Lampard.

The five of them were preparing for their pre-match show for Tuesday’s Champions League fixtures in the BT Sport’s studio when the video was shot. Though their choice of footballing clubs might differ, these legends will be out supporting England when the Three Lions take to the field against Australia.

A total of 69 Ashes series have been played before this one, with both Australia and England winning 32 each. Though Australia have won more Ashes Tests than England, winning 130 of the 325 matches, compared to England’s 106 victories.
