Pacer Abu Jayed Chowdhury Rahi and middle order batsman Mossaddek Hossian have been added to the squad

Uncapped pacer Abu Jayed Rahi got a call up for the Bangladesh side as the selectors picked a 15-man squad for the forthcoming World Cup on Tuesday.

Mosaddek Hossain also made a comeback in the squad that was announced by chief selector Minhajul Abedin and his co selector Habibul Bashar at Mirpur’s Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium on Tuesday.

The core of the Bangladesh team is very much settled over the last few years with the presence of some senior players and the team under the leadership of Mashrafe bin Murtaza is very much settled.

Selectors also emphasized on the issue while selecting the team for the big occasion.

“As the World Cup will be played in England and Wales, so we have focused on experience. Condition will be challenging there. But we have played well in the Champions Trophy two years ago. We have prepared our team considering that experience,” Minhajul said to media after a press conference in Mirpur.

However, with not much difficulty of choosing most of the players selectors were basically mulling on two spots- a paceman and a batsman in the late middle order who can bowl a bit.

Shafiul Islam and Taskin Ahmed were also in the contention but Rahi was finally chosen over them considering current form and fitness. Taskin has been going through the process of recovering himself from the effect of an injury while Shafiul is not in full rhythm as a pacer currently.

Selectors also thought Rahi’s ability of swinging the ball will be an asset for Tigers in the English condition.

“Abu Jayed got his chance in Test matches in New Zealand. We have observed that he bowled there with significant swing. The World Cup will be in English condition and there will be cold temperature in May-June period, and also we will play a tri-nation series in Ireland before the tournament.  In that sense we have preferred a swing bowler among our pace department. That’s why we have chosen Abu Jayed,” Minhajul added.

Young batsman Yasir Ali and Mosaddek both are in good form at the ongoing Dhaka Premier League but the latter got the nod thanks to his capacity to ball some off-spinners.

“Yasir Ali and Mosaddek were considered in the bating options as both of them are in good form recently but eventually Mosaddek was picked due to his spin bowling options,” said Minhazul.

“We wanted an all-rounder who can bowl off-spin. Because Mahmudullah is slightly suffering with shoulder injury, so he may not bowl in matches. That’s why we wanted a back-up off spinner in the squad and thus we have selected Mosaddek in the end,” he added.

BCB has also announced the squad for the tri-nation ODI series which will be played among hosts Ireland, Bangladesh and West Indies.

Yasir and off-spinner Naeem Hasan has been added to the 15-man World Cup squad for forming a 17-man squad for the tri-nation ODI series.
