All-rounder Nasir Hossain has been recalled to the national fold for Bangladesh’s 10-day long camp in Sussex, England and for the tri-nation series involving host Ireland and New Zealand
Nasir however, was only kept as standby in the squad for the 2017 Champions Trophy.
On the other hand, pacer Shafiul Islam has overcome fitness issues to reclaim a spot for both the tri-series and the eight-team Champions Trophy.
Meanwhile, spinner Shuvagata Hom has been axed.
Chief of the national selection panel, Minhajul Abedin Nannu announced the two squads in a press conference in Mirpur’s Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium on Thursday. The selection panel named a 19-member team for the Sussex camp and the tri-series in Ireland while for the eighth edition of the Champions Trophy, a 15-member squad was declared, along with four standbys.
Both Nasir and Shafiul were part of the squad during the home series against England last year. But Shafiul was excluded from national reckoning after picking up an injury during the 2016 BPL.
Explaining Nasir’s inclusion back to the national set-up, chief selector Minhajul said, “Including Nasir for the Sussex camp and the tri-series are part of the process to get him back in the national team. We have Mosaddek [Hossain] and Mahmudullah playing in the same position for which we could not include Nasir in the Champions Trophy squad. But he (Nasir) will always be under consideration for future (after the Champions Trophy) if he performs in Ireland.”
Wicketkeeper-batsman Nurul Hasan and seamer Subashish Roy did not make it to the Champions Trophy squad.
Minhajul though informed that Nurul will be part of the team during the Champions Trophy as an extra member and a backup stumper in case regular wicket-keeper Mushfiqur Rahim gets injured.
Expressing elation after getting called up, Nasir told Dhaka Tribune: “I am more than happy for being considered in the national team for the tri-series in Ireland. I hope I will be able to live up to the expectation of the national selectors. I had a bad patch and got dropped. So my first aim was to return to the national team. There is nothing to be worried about regarding not getting named in the Champions Trophy squad.”
Shafiul, in the meantime, said he will be on his toes so that he doesn’t fall prey to injury again.
“I try my best to look after myself. The injuries I get are mostly picked during matches. But now it is all good. I have been able to return back to the team, that too for an important event like the Champions Trophy,” said Shafiul.
