National team batsman Imrul Kayes made a brilliant double century for Khulna as the first round matches of the 21st National Cricket League came to an end Sunday with three draws and Barisal beating Sylhet.

Left-handed Imrul scored a valiant 202 not out before his side gained a huge first-innings lead at their home ground Sheikh Abu Naser Stadium, and rose to the top of tier one with 4.01 points.

In the other matches of the day, Barisal cruised to a commanding victory by an innings and 13-run margin over Sylhet while the ties between Dhaka-Rajshahi and Dhaka Metropolis-Chittagong ended in a draw.

Khulna v Rangpur, tier one

Replying to Rangpur’s first innings total of 227, Khulna declared their innings on 454 losing nine wickets, thanks to man of the match Imrul, who resumed the day on 29.

The southpaw picked up the second double century in his first-class career, facing 319 deliveries and striking 19 fours and half a dozen sixes.

Openers Robiul Islam Robi (76) and Imran Uzzaman (71) gave Khulna a strong base with a 136-run stand and the host looked forward to a big score in the last day when they resumed on 193 for the loss of three wickets with Soumya Sarkar on eight.

Soumya was dismissed for 36 and despite not getting much help from the others, Imrul carried the innings far with his man of the match performance.

Dhaka v Rajshahi, tier one

Dhaka gave a target of 298 to Rajshahi in day four at Khan Shaheb Osman Ali Stadium in Fatullah.

Taibur Rahman was the top-scorer for Dhaka with 88 while Raqibul Hasan scored 65 in the middle-order.

Left-arm spinner Taijul Islam picked up five wickets for Rajshahi.

Chasing 298, Rajshahi lost five wickets in 64 overs and scored 106 as the match ended in a draw.

Despite losing early wickets, Rajshahi skipper and experienced campaigner Jahurul Islam held his nerve and was unbeaten on 40 off 181.

Mushfiqur Rahim, who scored 75 in the first innings, made 21 before getting out against off spinner Shuvagata Hom.

Taibur was adjudged man of the match as he scored identical 88s in both the innings.

Dhaka Metro v Chittagong, tier two

Chittagong, who made 290 in the first innings, finished day four on 227 for five in their second innings in reply to Dhaka Metro’s first innings total of 354 at Mirpur Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Dhaka.

Chittagong’s opening pair Tamim Iqbal and Pinak Ghosh got off to a good start as, at the lunch break, they were 91 for no loss.

All eyes were on Tamim, as it was his first competitive game after a sabbatical, and his first NCL game in four years.

But Tamim missed the opportunity this time like the first innings (30 off 105 deliveries) as the opener was trapped in front after lunch against off-spinner Mahmudullah, scoring 46 off 112 balls with four fours and a six.

Pinak scored 57; Tasamul Haque made 57 while debutant Masum Khan was unbeaten on 61.

Eventually the match ended in a draw and Dhaka Metro’s Mahmudullah was adjudged man of the match for his all-round performance.

The Mymensingh lad took a combined six wickets in two innings and scored 63 in their only innings.

Barisal v Sylhet, tier two

Barisal bowlers produced another good display as they bundled out Sylhet for just 132 in the second innings at Shaheed Kamruzzaman Stadium in Rajshahi.

Sylhet scored only 86 in the first innings and that meant Barisal, who made 231/8 before declaring, won by an innings and 13 runs.

Skipper Jakir Hossain was the only one who offered any resistance as he was unbeaten on 45 off 114 deliveries for Sylhet.

Spin bowling duo Tanvir Islam and Monir Hossain bagged four and three wickets respectively.

Barisal’s right arm pacer Kamrul Islam Rabbi was adjudged man of the match for his brilliant bowling in the first innings where he notched six wickets conceding just 24 runs in 16.1 overs with five maidens.
