Veteran painter Syed Jahangir remembered

Syed Jahangir's family members, fans, and colleagues attended the ceremony and reminisced about different aspects of his versatile life

Veteran painter and former director and founder of the Department of Fine Arts at Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy, Syed Jahangir, was remembered at an event on Saturday. 

On the occasion of the 84th birth anniversary of the artist, the commemorative ceremony was organized at Gallery Chitrak in Dhanmondi.

Syed Jahangir's family members, fans, and colleagues attended the ceremony and reminisced about different aspects of his versatile life. The guests and speakers highlighted his creations and contribution to art. 

Syed Junayed, a family member of Syed Jahangir, said: “We ten siblings grew up very close to uncle. After the death of our father, uncle never let us feel the absence of a father. He is the source of all my work.”

In his speech, art critic Professor Moinuddin Khaled said:"Syed Jahangir was everyone’s favourite. Losing people like him is an irreparable loss to the country. 

"In today’s times, people like him are desperately needed to save the art and the artist."

Syed Jahangir was born on January 1, 1935, in Tetulia village of Satkhira. After working as a professional painter for almost 22 years, he joined Academy as the department head of Arts Faculty. 

Nature and season change was one of the characteristics of his paintings. He received the Ekushey Medal in the year of 1985. The veteran artist died on   December 292 last year at the age of 83.
