A two-week-long exhibition, titled Red Is Not A Colour, has been launched at Dwip Gallery to show the works of artist Sanjoy Chakraborty. The exhibition showcases the artist's work in the last ten or so years, depicting a set of references to the body, both social, individual, and nature.

The exhibition, which is curated by Mustafa Zaman, was jointly inaugurated by Professor Nazrul Islam, and Professor Shishir Bhattacharjee on July 12. It is open for all from 3pm to 9pm, except Mondays, and is set to close on July 25.

The artist's panoramic visualization, developed through both direct and indirect referencing, lands the viewers close to a number of intersections of art, life and nature. The political undertone in the works, which has been carried over to the otherwise social-individual envisioning, has chiefly been the result of the current polity.

In the artworks, there is an acknowledgement of the fact that the region has been plunged into chaos, through a willful amalgamation of the neo-liberal policies, and chimerical populist politics, where the religious-linguistic dyad serves to provide a veneer, thereby disguising the true nature of the beasts that are the nation states.

The chaos and violence  released from such a unique national complexity have assailed the artist-teacher Sanjoy. His works can thus be defined as a relay on human condition, where nature as well as human nature takes up a greater chunk of his attention, while he is smarting beneath the weight of the collective grievances the current world order has given rise to.

Curator Mustafa Zaman  wrote in a press statement: "There is no other alternative besides looking at everything in fragments. Artistes, poets, and thinkers- the trio who studies society- want to highlight the unity between humans, and nature in fragments. Sanjoy Chakraborty wants to highlight the material emotions-feelings, and some societal diseases, while keeping an eye on the eternal relationship between nature, and human nature."
