Bringing an end to the country’s dry spell of top pageant contest, 20-year-old Chhillar is the sixth Indian to win the title

After a long wait, Manushi Chhillar has finally brought the Miss World crown to India since it was previously won by Priyanka Chopra 17 years ago. Chhillar has won the coveted 67th Miss World 2017 on November 18 at the grand event held in China’s Sanya, competing against contestants from 118 countries.

Bringing an end to the country’s dry spell of top pageant contest, 20-year-old Chhillar is the sixth Indian to win the title since 2000.

The Miss World 2017 winner is a trained classical dancer and a medical student from Haryana, who also has a passion for outdoor sports. She actively participates in paragliding, bungee jumping, snorkelling and scuba diving, apart from sketching and painting.

Chhillar edged out from top five contestants from England, France, Kenya and Mexico. According to her profile on the Miss World website, she aims to become a cardiothoracic surgeon and wishes to open a chain of non-profitable hospitals in rural areas of India.

Her personal motto, as described on the website, reads: “When you cease to dream you cease to live,” and “Courage to give flight to your dreams and the ability to believe in yourself makes life worth living.”

Her sensible stance has created a benchmark for all, plunging her to the top five.

When asked which profession, according to Chhillar, deserved the highest salary, she responded: “I think a mother deserves the highest respect and when you talk about salary it’s not always about cash but I feel it’s the love and respect that you give to someone. My mother has always been the biggest inspiration in my life.

“All mothers sacrifice so much for their kids. So, I think it is the job of a mother that deserves the highest salary.”

Her words affirmed that she could become a role model in the progress for women in India and in other countries too.

Reita Faria was the first Indian to win the Miss World crown back in 1966, followed by Aishwarya Rai Bacchan, who had bagged the title in 1994. Diana Haydon brought the crown to India in 1997, followed by Yukta Mookhey in 1999 and then Priyanka Chopra, back in 2000.

Miss World winners from India, apart from Reita Faria, all have tried their hands in acting too. While some have been successful, such as Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Priyanka Chopra, others were not so lucky.

Chhillar wants to give it a try too.

In June, after she was crowned Miss India World, Chhillar was asked whether she was interested in a film career and with whom she would like to debut with. She said: “Aamir Khan. His movies have a meaning and they touch the nerve of society. His roles are also very different and interesting.”

Hence, there is a chance of seeing her in Bollywood in the near future. After all, this has become a norm in the Indian film industry.

During the finale of the Miss World 2017 beauty pageant, Manushi Chhillar was crowned by Stephanie Del Valle, the former Miss World title holder from Puerto Rico, at the Sanya City Arena in China.

Chhillar beat Miss England Stephanie Hill and Miss Mexico Andrea Meza, who were titled as the first and second runners-up, respectively.

The announcement of the new Miss World 2017 was also made public through the pageant’s official Twitter and Facebook pages.
