Reema Lagoo’s most memorable movies

Reema Lagoo, Bollywood’s favourite on screen mother, passed away in a Mumbai hospital after suffering a cardiac arrest on Wednesday night.

The actress was famous for playing the role of the mother of main characters in films and TV soaps. She also acted in several Marathi language plays. Here are some of her memorable contributions in Bollywood which can never be forgotten.

Maine Pyar Kiya

Lagoo, who will be remembered as the favourite Rajshree-mother, played a doting mom to Salman Khan for the first time in Maine Pyar Kiya. The 1989 Indian musical romantic film, which was written and directed by Sooraj R Barjatya, featured Salman Khan and Bhagyashree in key roles.

Aashiqui

The hit 90s film Aashiqui, starring Rahul Roy and Anu Aggarwal in pivotal roles, also had Reema Lagoo as Rahul’s (Rahul Roy) mother. The actress beautifully portrayed the role of a mother who supports her son as he has his first brush with love. Her nuanced performance earned her a nomination for the Best Supporting Actress Award at the Filmfare Awards.

Hum Aapke Hain Koun

Reema Lagoo and filmmaker Sooraj Barjatya were an unbeatable combination. It was the filmmaker who helped her seal her place as Bollywood’s favourite on-Hum Aapke Hain Koun, the senior actress played an integral role as Mrs Chaudhary, the mother of Nisha (Madhuri Dixit) and her elder sister Pooja (Renuka Shahane). Those who have seen the film can recall the hit antakshari round between the two families that left us with amazing tracks for years to listen to. The film, also starring Anupam Kher and Alok, gained cult status in film history.

Vaastav

Reema Lagoo as Shanta, Raghu’s (Sanjay Dutt) mother, not only won critical acclaim, but also turned out to be one of the most memorable roles in her career. Lagoo played mother to a gangster Sanjay Dutt in Vaastav. The actress won her fourth Filmfare award for a realistic portrayal of a mother who kills her own son.

Hum Saath Saath Hain

Yet another 90s film which saw Reema Lagoo as a strong female voice in the house. This time, she played the mother of four stars – Salman Khan, Saif Ali khan, Mohnish Behl and Neelam.The actress’ character was the plot spinner, which set the stage for an interesting storyline. It was a story inspired by the Ramayana, where the mother splits her family for the sake of her own children. Then her own son takes a stand for his stepbrother, and the mother realises her mistake and eventually brings her whole family under the same roof. Reema did an incredible job playing the main character in the film.
