Pohela Boishakh presents us an opportunity to start anew
Pohela Boishakh is upon us.
A time of festivity and joy, the Bangla New Year is a colourful occasion that allows us to fully appreciate the rich diversity of our culture and our people -- it reminds us what it means to be a Bangali and indeed a Bangladeshi.
But despite our unity and all the progress we have made as a people, there are still those among us who try to fuel the fires of communalism in an effort to divide us, and destabilize our country.
And, unfortunately, more often than not, these unscrupulous individuals succeed.
We must remember that it is by working together and understanding each other’s strengths that we have built Bangladesh into the nation it is, a nation that is soon to welcome middle income status.
Only through unity can we learn from our past mistakes. Mistakes that have cost us precious lives, such as the numerous fires and industrial accidents we witnessed in the last few months.
Indeed, in the past, celebrating Pohela Boishakh itself has been marred with incidences of sexual harassment and predatory behaviour, and it would be naïve to not prepare for such occurrences as we move forward.
We cannot and should not let these unwanted elements ruin this happy occasion, and any untoward behaviour must be reported to the authorities and the perpetrators brought to book.
Every year, Pohela Boishakh presents us an opportunity to start anew, and we must seize this opportunity as we to look to the future.
Shubho Noboborsho to all our readers.
