Bangladeshi football fans will get a lifetime opportunity to catch a glimpse of the Brazil’s 2014 Fifa World Cup Trophy

Bangladeshi football fans will get a lifetime opportunity to catch a glimpse of the Brazil’s 2014 Fifa World Cup Trophy along and a chance to meet German football legend and first ever Fifa World Player of the year Lothar Matthaus in December this year.

The 35 centimeters golden trophy will be brought to Bangladesh on December 17 for the first time, eleven years after the 2002 Fifa World Cup Trophy visited Dhaka. The fans will get the chance to view the trophy the next day at a day long program when the most recognized trophy in the world will be showcased at the Bangabandhu National Stadium. The trophy will reach Dhaka straight from United Arab Emirates and leave the city on December 19.

Bangladesh Football Federation (BFF) general secretary revealed the information yesterday. He also said that Coca-cola, the sponsor of the Fifa World Cup Trophy tour, is trying to bring the former captain of 1990 World Cup winners West Germany side Lothar Matthaus to Bangladesh during the three-day tour of trophy.

The whole thing was finalised yesterday after BFF president Kazi Salahuddin had a meeting with Abhijit Datta - a regional country manager of the South East Asia branch of Coca-Cola, a drinking partner of FIFA - and Coca-cola Bangladesh’s county’s manager Debashish Dev at his office yesterday.

“The trophy will be brought to Bangladesh on December 17. A program will be arranged the following day so that the football fans can see it close up and they will also be given opportunities to take picture with the trophy. It will be an open event. There could even be a friendly match at the Bangbandhu National Stadium to make it more attractive,” said Shohag. He also said Coca-cola will offer around 15,000 fans a chance to have their pictures taken with the most prestigious trophy.

Bangladesh is the first country in South Asia where the trophy will be brought and after a three-day visit, the trophy will be taken to Bhutan, Nepal and India and then it will go to Thailand as part of trophy’s world-wide tour of the trophy, that will be end at World Cup host nation Brazil in 2014.

The last time a replica of World Cup Trophy was brought to Bangladesh was on April 27, 2002 before the 2002 Fifa World Cup held in Japan and Korea.
