This title win also means that IUB is the first private university to win DU IV, one of the most sought-after debating championships in Bangladesh's debating calendar. It is also the second championship for the university's premier club, IUBDC, in the 2019 debating season, after they had also won Drishty Debating Championship held in Chittagong on February
Independent University, Bangladesh Debating Club (IUBDC) bags another national debating championship this year as their team IUB A, represented by Aaqib Farhan Hossain and Zobayer Ahmed, won the Dhaka University Inter-Varsity (DU IV) 2019 debating tournament. The tournament was held at the Teacher-Student Centre (TSC) of the Dhaka University campus over the weekend, July 26-27.
This title win also means that IUB is the first private university to win DU IV, one of the most sought-after debating championships in Bangladesh's debating calendar. It is also the second championship for the university's premier club, IUBDC, in the 2019 debating season, after they had also won Drishty Debating Championship held in Chittagong on February.
The British Parliamentary (BP) debating format was used in the tournament, which has four teams in every round; two government sides and two opposition ones divided between upper and lower houses. The other competitors in the grand final were two teams from Institute of Business Administration, DU (IBA DU) and one from North South University (NSU).
IUB A debater Aaqib was ranked the second best among the top ten speakers of the tournament, while his team mate Zobayer was decided as the best speaker in the final.
Zobayer told the Dhaka Tribune: "I have been to countless finals, and at this point, there are no jitters while delivering a final speech. The adrenaline rush is there, which is channelled in a very positive way by debaters during such a stage. Since our side was closing opposition, we were the last speakers in the final. By the time it was our turn to speak we knew the cases that came from the other three sides, and we also knew how to distinguish our one. We had integrated a lot of rebuttals to their cases in our speeches. Hopefully more trophies will come this season."
The topic for the final usually referred to as the motion in debating tournaments, was "this house would prefer a world where human life naturally ended aged 50."
President of Bangladesh Debating Council (BDC) Fardeen Ameen was the Deputy Chief Adjudicator (DCA) of the tournament. The final noteworthy achievement of IUBDC was the number of its members who became breaking adjudicators; which means ranked high enough, by the debaters in the preliminary rounds, to judge the knock-out stages. Seven IUBDC broke as judges for the knockout rounds, and they are Archi Ananya, Sonaly Siddique, Fatima Ara Khan, Labiba Fairooz, Sadia Rowshan Sweta, Ahmed Imtiaz Samad and Saima Tasfia Roja.
DU IV 2019 was organized by the Dhaka University Debating Society (DUDS) and it featured four preliminary rounds and 28 university debating teams.
Notably, Aaqib and Zobayer along with Nabil Hasan had also won the United Asian Debating Championship of 2018, held in Bandung, Indonesia.
