A Dhaka court Monday recorded the confessional statement of Jasim Uddin Rahmania, chief of militant organisation Ansarullah Bangla Team, in connection with the murder of blogger Ahmed Rajeeb Haider.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md Asaduzzaman Nur recorded his statement under section 164 of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC) and ordered him jail.
In his statement, the accused said he used to deliver sermons to his followers against atheist bloggers. Many students of public and private universities gathered at his Markajul Ulum Al Islamia madrasa at Mohammadpur.
He used to tell the youths that the atheists should be killed to establish Shariah law, General Recording Officer of the court Sub-Inspector Md Moksed Ali told the Dhaka Tribune.
Jasim, however, claimed that he had no direct involvement with Rajeeb’s killing that had taken place on February 15 in front of the victim’s Mirpur residence, days after thousands of youths gathered at Shahbagh to demand the death penalty of war criminals.
Rajeeb was involved with the movement and used to campaign against Jamaat-e-Islami and its student wing Islami Chhatra Shibir.
On February 16, the victim’s father filed a case with Pallabi police station against several unidentified people.
On March 2, police arrested North South University students Faisal bin Nayeem alias Dwip, 22, Maksudul Hassan Anik, 23, Ehsan Reza Rumman, 23, Naim Sikder Irad, 19, and Nafis Imtiaz, 22. They also confessed before a magistrate.
Jasim was arrested on August 12 along with 30 of his followers in Barguna.
