Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission has already blocked more than 4,000 adult sites in the last six weeks
After blocking more than 4,000 pornographic and at least 176 other websites, the government is now looking to shut down a further 15,636 adult and 2,235 gambling websites.
Through his verified Facebook account, Posts, Telecommunications and Information Technology Minister Mustafa Jabbar disclosed the matter on Monday.
“Now we have found 15,636 adult and 2,235 gambling sites. These are coupled with TikTok and Bigo Live apps. All are being blocked,” he wrote in a Facebook status, thanking his colleagues for their support in the crackdown.

Following orders from the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC), the Internet Service Providers Association Bangladesh (Ispab) has already blocked more than 4,000 adult sites in the last six weeks, said Ispab President Aminul Hakim.
The BTRC on Sunday ordered blocking of 176 gambling websites.
The telecom regulator on Monday also ordered the International Internet Gateway (IIG) to block access to 55 more porn sites.
According to IIG operators, Bangladesh currently uses 1,100 gigabits per second (Gbps) of bandwidth. The crackdown on adult and gambling sites will massively reduce the internet usage, since a vast number of users regularly visit the websites, the operators say.

On November 19 last year, the High Court asked the authorities concerned to block all the pornography websites in the country for six months.
The secretaries of posts, telecommunications and information technology, law, and information, the BTRC, and all mobile phone operators were then asked to execute the order.
In late 2016, the government had started an initiative to shut down more than 500 pornographic sites, but the move eventually failed as most of those websites were found accessible just a couple of months later.
The High Court in 2015 had directed the government to stop pornography and obscene pictures from being uploaded and shared through mobile phones and social media, including Facebook and Twitter.
As of December 2018, Bangladesh has at least 91.348 million internet users, with 85.552 million of them having access to mobile internet services.
