Nasim: BNP cannot free Khaleda through frivolous movements

The government welcomes strong criticism from opposition lawmakers, he said

BNP will not be able to free its chief Khaleda Zia from jail through frivolous movements, Awami League presidium member and 14-party alliance spokesperson Mohammed Nasim said on Friday.

He made the remarks while talking to reporters after an alliance meeting held at Awami League’s central office in Bangabandhu Avenue, Dhaka.

“We hope that the newly-elected lawmakers of BNP and other parties will join parliament and challenge the government to correct its mistakes. We also welcome strong criticism from the opposition lawmakers. This is the best path for them,  rather than holding press briefings and insignificant movements to free their jailed Chairperson Khaleda Zia.”

He said local government election is imminent where members of all parties usually take part. However, it is unfortunate that a major political party of the country is not participating in the local polls this time.

“We all know why they are doing it. By boycotting, they could not foil any previous elections, rather caused themselves destruction,” he said.

The 14-party alliance spokesperson has urged BNP to avoid the path of boycotting polls and return to the path of democracy. “A huge number of voters will participate in the upcoming local polls.”

Nasim, who is a former Health Minister, said: “We will ask the administration and election commission to take all necessary preparations to ensure free and fair local polls.”

“There will be no compromise in ensuring a fair election. This is what the Prime Minister wants and no minister or lawmaker will interfere in the process.”

Mentioning that the country is moving fast on the path of development, Nasim said: “Bangladesh always believes in democracy. The people of this country have taken part in the independence struggle under the leadership of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. Recently we have achieved the victory of democracy by participating in the just-concluded general election. Under the leadership of Sheikh Hasina, the country witnessed mass developments in all sectors.”

On behalf of the 14-party alliance, Nasim also announced month-long program marking the significance of the month of March.

Workers Party President Rashed Khan Menon, Bangladesher Samyabadi Dal General Secretary Dilip Barua and Awami League Deputy Office Secretary Barrister Biplob Barua, among others, were also present at the time.
