Campaign gains pace, 1 dies in pre-poll violence

Campaigning for the upcoming union parishad elections has gained momentum as Awami League (AL) and BNP activists rally behind their party-backed chairman and member candidates in the elections to 4,275 union councils across the country. The two major political parties’ leaders and activists are keeping busy as the chairman elections will see the direct participation of political parties for the first time this year. Incidents of violence have greatly increased as two people have already been killed in pre-poll violence.

The two major political parties’ leaders and activists are keeping busy as the chairman elections will see the direct participation of political parties for the first time this year.

Incidents of violence have greatly increased as two people have already been killed in pre-poll violence.

In Bhola, a supporter of a chairman candidate was killed and five others were injured by the people loyal to another chairman candidate in Shantirhat Berirpar area, Sadar upzila, yesterday. The deceased is Siraj.

Supporters of chairman candidate Jahangir Sani attacked Siraj while he was returning home after conducting a campaign in favour of chairman candidate Bazlu Member in the early hours of the day.

He was taken to Bhola Sadar Hospital where the on duty doctor declared him dead.

Officer-in-charge of Bhola Model police station told the Dhaka Tribune that they would take action against the people responsible for the murder on receipt of the postmortem report.

In Lakshmipur, at least 10 supporters of a BNP-backed chairman candidate were injured and several vehicles were vandalised during an election campaign at Komolnagar union parishad.

The injured are undergoing treatment at Komolnagar Upazila Health Complex.

Local sources said supporters of AL candidate Faisal Ahmed Ratan attacked supporters of BNP-backed candidate Moslehuddin when they were holding a rally at Muslimpara at Komolnagar union parishad.

Officer-in-Charge of Komolnagar police station told the Dhaka Tribune that the BNP activists were injured in a chase and counter-chase which took place between the supporters of both parties.

The upcoming union parishad elections will be held in six phases. Voting will take place on March 22, March 31, April 23, May 7, May 28 and June 4.

In the first phase, on March 22, elections will be held in 752 union councils while elections in another 710 union councils will be held in the second phase on Mar 31.

The third phase will see voting in 711 unions on April 23, followed by polling in 728 unions on May 7, and in another 714 unions on May 28. In the last phase, residents of 660 unions will go to the polls on June 4.

On Wednesday, a leader of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal was killed and another was injured as supporters of an AL candidate attacked him while he was returning home from conducting a campaign at Raghunathpur village, Nazirpur upazila in Pirojpur.

The deceased is Shamsul Haque Chhoto, joint convener of the Nazirpur upazila unit. He was also the nephew of the BNP-backed candidate for chairman of Sheikhmatia union Towhid Chairman.
