Former UP chairman sued for rape in Gopalganj

The rape survivor filed the case with Tungipara police station on Thursday

A former union parishad chairman was named the prime accused in a case filed for raping a woman in Gopalganj.

Shukhomoy Bain, former chairman of Dumuria Union Parishad under Tungipara upazila, was named the prime accused among three others, Bidhan Bain, 30, Bikash Bain, 32, and Vivek Bain, 50. 

The rape survivor filed the case with Tungipara police station on Thursday.

According to the case statement, Shukhomoy, after being rejected multiple times for his inappropriate advances, abducted the woman to an isolated place and raped her on Wednesday night. Hearing her screams, Shukhomoy’s neighbours, Bidhan Bain, Bikash Bain, and Vivek Bain rushed in and assaulted the woman.

Locals say, the woman went to Shukhomoy’s house to speak about the prospect of marriage but he bailed on her. The woman determined not leave the house was once again assaulted by Shukhomoy’s family members. 

Tungipara police station OC KM Enamul Kabir confirmed the matter and said: “No one was arrested as of yet but we are conducting drives to arrest all the accused.”

The woman was sent to Gopalganj General Hospital for medical tests, he added.
