Update : 30 Oct 2019, 02:08 PM

Jahangirnagar University (JU) Assistant Proctor Mohibur Rouf Shaibal has allegedly assaulted a student who was protesting, alongside others, against Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Farzana Islam, with demands for her resignation.

The incident occurred near the old Faculty of Arts and Humanities building of the institution around 10:30am on Wednesday.

The protestors, under the banner of “Jahangirnagar against Corruption,” blocked and padlocked the entrances of most of the administrative and academic building's gates on the campus, creating a deadlock.

Nazir Amin Chowdhury Joy, president of Student Union, claimed that Assistant Proctor Shaibal arrived with some first year students at the old faculty building, where they were staging the protest for the third day.

He said the students tried to forcefully enter the building. The assistant proctor then manhandled Nazir, and hauled him away from the gate.

Although this correspondent made multiple phone calls to Assistant Proctor Shaibal, also a teacher of the Department of Drama and Dramatics,Shaibal could not be reached.

However, acting proctor A S M Firoz Ul Hasan of the institution alleged that the Assistant Proctor Shaibal was the one assaulted.

He said: "The general students were trying to enter the building, but the protesting students would not let them in. Therefore, the assistant proctor went and stopped them from blocking the entrance.

"No one used any force on the students."

The acting proctor said the assistant proctor was injured during the incident as some protestors hit him in the stomach. He was then taken to Enam Medical College from treatment.

Meanwhile, when contacted, Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Farzana Islam did not answer the phone.

The students have been demonstrating on the campus since August 23, demanding removal of the university’s VC Prof Farzana Islam due to her alleged involvement in corruption.

Protestors  also called for a strike on the campus on Oct 2, which was later withdrawn for holding a meeting with the VC. However, no solution came from the meeting; therefore, the protest continued.
