98 fishermen held around the country for defying ilish ban

At least 128 people were arrested on Monday in connection to illegally netting ilish, despite the government's ongoing 22-days ban on netting mother ilish in the Padma, Jamuna, Meghna Rivers crossing six districts.

The detainees were fined, and sentenced to three days to a year in jail for their crimes.

In Chandpur, a group of fishermen attacked the police on Monday on the banks of the Meghna River adjacent to Rajrajeswar union of Sadar upazila after they obstructed them from catching mother ilish following the 22 day government ban.

In response to the attack, a team of river police fired rubber bullets to bring the situation under control, and arrested 17 fishermen.

The detainees are, Kamal, Sabuj, Shamsu, Milan, Amir, Kaosar, Bijoy, Ruhul, Habib, Ibrahim, Charu, Sattar, Aynaul, Al-Amin, Jashim, Nazmul, Monir, and a juvenile.

Chandpur river police OC Abu Taher said, a patrol team of police were conducting a regular drive on the Meghna River on Monday to monitor the ongoing ban on catching mother ilish in the district.

After reaching Rajrajeswar, they found some fishermen, who were violating the ban, and tried to stop them. However, the group of fishermen swooped on the law enforcers with makeshift weapons.

"We arrested 17 fishermen in connection to the attack. We also seized 40000 metre fishing nets, and 20kgs of ilish from the spot."

"Five were injured in the attack, among them three were policemen," the OC added.

In Manikganj, a patrol team arrested 15 fishermen during a drive, and sentenced each of them to a year in jail, confirmed UNO AFM Firoz Mahmud.

The detainees, Salam, Mamun, Torab, Ashraf, Chan, Hajaj, Taiyab, Akkas, Bakul, Pannu, Badol, Saiful, Sanoar, Mohib, and Salam were detained while illegally netting ilish.

In Munshiganj, a mobile court led by Deputy Magistrate Iliyash Shikder and Riyazur Rahman jailed 33 fishermen, and 15 buyers on Monday  for illegally fishing ilish on the Padma River, nearby Louhajang upazila.

A combined team of district law enforcers made a drive to the area and detained 68, among them 16 under-aged boys were released, confirmed Upazila Senior Fisheries Officer Idris Ali Talukdar.

In Madaripur, a mobile court arrested 13 fishermen, and eight buyers on Monday  when they were caught illegally netting ilish on the Meghna River, near Shibchar area.

The detainees are, Badsha, Nayan, Shahjahan, Omar, Rob, Mannan, Ashique, Nasir, Saddam, Sekandar, Hakim, Tota, Sohag, Sekandar, Rejaul, Shahin, Surman, Shukur, Shahin, Kamrul, and Harun Sheikh.

According to the court, on information of ongoing illegal fishing in the restricted areas of Bandarkhola, Charmanajat, Kathalbari, and Madborer Char, a team consisting of Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Asadujjaman, Upazila Associate Commissioner Al Numan and Upazila Fisheries Officer ATM Samsuzzaman conducted a drive on the Padma River near Shibchar, confirmed Shibchar UNO, Magistrate Asadujjaman.

"The raids would continue till the ban ends," the UNO said.

In Barisal, a mobile court arrested 20 fishermen for netting ilish violating the ongoing ban in several areas of the district on Monday, confirmed the district authority.

In Comilla, a mobile court fined, and sentenced seven ilish traders to a year in jail on Monday for illegally trading in ilish at Bijaynagar, and Sadar bus-stand area, along with 93 kgs of ilish, confirmed UNO Tapti Chakma.
