The resignation came 10 days after former VC Khondoker Md Nasiruddin stepped down amid protests

Mohammad Ashiquzzaman Bhuiyan has resigned from his post of proctor at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Science and Technology University (BSMRSTU) in Gopalganj.

The BSMRSTU Registrar Prof Dr Md Nuruddin Ahmed confirmed the matter on Thursday.

Ashiquzzaman submitted his resignation letter to the registrar around 11:30am, citing his physical ailment, and thus inability to carry out the duty of the post.

Vice Chancellor (VC) (in-charge) Prof Dr Md Shahjahan said: "We have received the letter, and will make a decision in this regard soon."

The resignation came 10 days after former VC Khondoker Md Nasiruddin stepped down on September 30 amid weeks of student protests.

Earlier, assistant proctors Md Humayun Kabir, and Dr Md Tariqul Islam resigned from their posts expressing solidarity with the demonstration. Another assistant proctor Dr Md Nazmul Haq, however, resigned citing personal reasons.

Students, who wished to remain anonymous, said the proctor was a follower of the former VC Nasiruddin, and assisted him in committing corruption, and other irregularities in the university.

Ashiquzzaman, also an associate professor of English department, now quit his post only to save himself from any probable action, they said.

He should also face the legal action, they added.

On the other hand, the proctor said: "I am not physically well. At this moment, it is not possible for me to carry out the proctoral duties. That is why, I submitted my resignation letter to the registrar."

He, however, denied commenting on the issues of corruption, and irregularities.
