BSMRSTU students continue protest for 5th day amid heavy rainfall

The vice chancellor denied the allegation of attacking the students

Students of Gopalganj’s BSMRSTU are continuing their hunger strike for the fifth day, in spite of heavy rainfall, demanding the resignation of Vice Chancellor (VC) Prof Dr Khondoker Md Nasiruddin.

The students of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Science and Technology University (BSMRSTU) carried on with their protests in front of the administrative building, completely drenched in a 16-long-hour rain, which started on Sunday afternoon and continued till around 8am on Monday.

The demonstrating students of other departments said they were beaten up, which left 20 of them injured, and even the female students were harassed. The university, however, lifted the suspension order on September 18.

On September 19, the students began the sit-in hunger strike, demanding the resignation of the vice chancellor.

On September 21, the student hostels were closed down and the students were asked to leave. The attacks took place on the same day, leaving 20 of them injured.

The students alleged they were attacked by local and hired goons, on the order of the vice chancellor. However, Prof Dr Khondoker denied the allegation.

Humayun Kabir, teacher of the social science department, was exempted from his proctorial post due to the attack on the students. Many other faculty members have supported and shown solidarity to this protest.
