2 killed in 'gunfights'

A suspected drug dealer and an alleged terrorist have been killed in reported gunfights with police in Mymensingh and Chapainawabganj.In Mymensingh, Rubel, 31, a suspected drug dealer was killed in a reported gunfight at Hobirbari in Bhaluka upazila early Saturday. 

Shah Kamal Akand, officer-in-charge of Detective Branch (DB) said: "We received a tip about a group of drug peddlers gathering at Hobirbari around 2:30am Saturday, and then went on a drive in that area.

"However, understanding our presence, the drug peddlers opened fire on us, forcing us to fire back in self-defence," the OC added.

Later police took Rubel, who was shot during the gunfight, to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital, where the duty doctors declared him dead.

Police also recovered 200 yaba tablets and 100 gram heroin from the spot.

In Chapainawabganj, Tutul, 35, son of Fazlu Monna of Ram Chandrapur village was killed in a reported gunfight at Moharajpur in Sadar upazila on Saturday afternoon.

Tipped off that some terrorists were holding a secret meeting at Mojarajpur to foil the upcoming upazila parishad election, a team of police conducted a drive there, said Inspector (Operations) of Sadar Police Station Md Idris Ali.

Sensing the presence of law enforcers, the terrorists opened fire at them around 1pm, triggering a gunfight.

Police rescued bullet-hit Tutul after the gun battle and took him to Sadar Hospital where doctors pronounced him dead, the police official said.

Police recovered a pistol, a magazine, five sharp weapons and some empty bottles of Phensidyl syrup from the spot.

Tutul was wanted in 17 cases, including of murder, sabotage and arms possession, Idris said.
