9 killed in road accidents in 7 districts

21 others injured

At least nine people were killed and 21 others injured in road accidents across the country on Sunday

In Habiganj, a minor school boy was killed, and three others were injured, after a auto-rickshaw carrying them lost control, and fell into a roadside ditch at the Ratanpur area of Shayestaganj upazila in the afternoon.

The deceased Imon Ahmed, 10, was a third grade student from Alapur village of the same upazila, said Habiganj Sadar Model Police Station OC (probe) Ziaur Rahman.

Imon’s parents were also among the injured in the accident.

 In Rajshahi, two people were killed in separate road accidents in the afternoon.

The deceased were identified as, school teacher Anwar Hossain Rony, 34, from Paba upazila, and sixth grade student Asadul Islam,13, of Bagmara upazila.

Paba police station Sub-Inspector Mahfuzur Rahman said, Anwar was on his way home on a motorcycle after his shift ended at Dhopaghata A K High School. On the Rajshahi-Naogaon Highway in Alai Bidirpur area a truck hit his motorbike, threw him off the vehicle, and the impact killed him on the spot.

In a separate incident, Asadul was killed when a human hauler carrying him collided with a parked truck at Dangachhi area of Bhabaniganj municipality, and fell into a roadside ditch, said Bagmara police station OC Ataur Rahman.

15 other passengers on the same vehicle were also injured in the incident. 

In Brahmanbaria, a footballer was killed, and another injured in a road accident on the Dhaka-Agartala Highway in Lamarbari of Akhaura upazila.

The deceased, Saiful Islam, 17, and Masum Khandakar, two fellow footballers, were heading to the Upazila Nirbahi Officer's office (UNO) when they met with the accident.

The injured, Masum, who is undergoing treatment at Brahmanbaria  Sadar Hospital, said: "The accident occurred when our motorcycle collided head-on with a three wheeler. Our vehicle lost control, and we fell on the side of the road. Locals took us to the hospital where the on-duty doctor declared Saiful dead."

Medical Officer of the hospital Syed Ariful Islam said: "Saiful died of a severe blow to his head, and internal bleeding. Masum will be released after primary treatment."

In Khulna, a Brac Bank official named Abdus Samad was killed in a road accident on the Khulna-Satkhira Highway at Nijkhamar area of the district around 7am.

According to police, Samad was heading to Gopalganj when a Dumuria bound sand-laden truck hit his motorcycle, and killed him on the spot.

Ratneshwar Mandal, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Lobonchora police station, confirmed the incident, and said: "The deceased was a resident of Keshabpur, Jessore. His dead body was sent to Khulna Medical College Hospital morgue.

The deceased, Shahbuddin, 19, was son of Rejaul Karim of Sirajganj.

Delowar Hossain, OC of Bonpara Highway police outpost, said: "Shahbuddin was trying to cross the road, when the truck hit his motorcycle on the Bonpara-Hatikumrul Highway. He died on the spot.

"We seized the truck but the driver, and helper fled the scene. We are trying to arrest them," the OC added.

In Natore, a motorcyclist was killed when a covered van hit his vehicle at Bonpara area in Gurudaspur upazila at 12 am.

The deceased Shahabuddin, 19, was from tarash area in Grurdashpur  upazila, said Bonpara highway police station OC Delwar Hossain.

In Gazipur, two women were killed after a covered van ran them over at Telirchala area of the Dhaka-Tangail Highway in the afternoon.

The deceased were identified as Tasiron Begum, 50, from Kamrangachala area of Kaliakair upazila, and Ayesha Akhter alias Aleya, 25, from Konabari Purbapara area of Gazipur city.

Salna highway police station OC Mujibur Rahman said a bus rammed an autorickshaw carrying Tasiron and Aleya, who fell on the road after the impact. Soon thereafter a covered van ran them over, and killed them on the spot.

Police seized the covered van, and arrested it’s driver. Vehicle movement was halted for half an hour on the highway after the accident.

In Barisal, a man was killed, and two others injured when an auto-rickshaw carrying them hit a parked truck at Amtala Mor area of the city on Sunday.

The deceased Monir Hossain, 20, was a factory worker in Dhaka, confirmed Kotwali police station OC Nurul Islam.

The two injured were admitted to Barisal Sher E Bangla Medical College Hospital.
