A man was arrested for stabbing a seventh grader, who rejected his advances, in Rampura village of the Gobindaganj upazila in Gaibandha.

The girl is being treated at the Gaibandha Sadar Hospital.

Assistant Superintendent of Police Anwar Hossain said prime accused Ashik and his mother Komola Begum have been arrested in connection with the incident.

“We’ve found evidence of his involvement during the primary investigation,” Hossain said.

Locals said Ashik had been stalking the victim for quite some time and threatened to kill her parents if she refused his advances.

However, the girl told her family and school authorities about the threats and her relatives contacted Ashik’s family.

Enraged, on Sunday night Ashik and his cohorts broke into the victim’s house and stabbed her indiscriminately.

Ashik and his cohorts fled when neighbours rushed in after hearing the victim’s scream.

“She needed 32 stitches,” Gaibandha Sadar Hospital on-duty doctor said.

Meanwhile, teachers, students and locals of the area held a human chain and protest rally demanding punishment for Ashik and his cohorts.
