A suspected robber has been killed in a reported gunfight with police in Patuakhali.

The incident took place at around 2:30am on Saturday.

The deceased is Chan Mia Hawlader, 42, a resident of Pashchim Kalagachhia village under Amtali upazila in Barguna.

Police said Chan Mia, the ringleader of an inter-district robbery gang, was accused in at least 30 cases, including of murder and robbery, filed with different police stations across the country including Patuakhali and Barguna.

He was also on the run after being convicted in a case filed with Barguna Sadar police station, police claimed.

Patuakhali Sadar police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mostafizur Rahman said a police team was patrolling the Patuakhali-Kuakata Highway early on Saturday.

When they reached the Ballavpur area around 2:30am, a gang of 10 to 12 robbers opened fire on the law enforcers, prompting them to retaliate which triggered a gunfight, he said.

Chan Mia received bullet wounds and died on the spot while his associates fled the scene, he said.

Four police personnel were also injured in the gunfight, the OC claimed.

Police recovered a locally made gun, six cartridge shells, and sharp weapons from the spot.
