1 dead, 20 infected by dengue in Khulna

Doctors believe none of the hospitalized was infected in Khulna

A man has died and 20 others have been hospitalized after getting infected by dengue in Khulna in July.

The deceased Asad, from Maheshpur Upazila of Jhenaidah, died on Monday.

Among the infected, 11 were treated in Khulna Media College Hospital, three were treated in Khulna City Medical College Hospital, three others were treated in Gazi Medical College Hospital, two treated in Kushtia General Hospital and one was treated in Jhenaidah Sadar Hospital. 

All the infected are from regions of Khulna, Narail, Bagerhat, Jessore, Kushtia and Jhenaidah.

Doctors believe none of the hospitalized was infected in Khulna, but from outside. 

Divisional Director (health) of the Health Department of Khulna Division said: “There is no dengue in Khulna and no reason to panic. Medical history shows they were infected outside of Khulna.

"They will soon recover with proper treatment,” he added. 

The Health Department also said that there are no means of testing dengue in the public hospitals of Khulna. Though the private hospitals provide the service, it is really expensive, and the tests cost around Tk1,100-Tk1,500.

Khulna Health Department (Disease Control) Assistant Director Dr Ferdousi Akhter said: “A cell for preserving the information on dengue has been opened at the divisional level. A three-member dengue prevention team has been established, which I will lead.” 

She added: “Dengue infected people should stay in complete rest and drink ample amount of water, juice and other liquids. They can intake painkiller drugs like paracetamol but never intake antibiotics. The infected ones should be rushed to hospital."
