Man held for gang-raping woman in Cox’s Bazar

Two UP members were also arrested for allegedly trying to cover up the incident

Police arrested a rape suspect belonging to a syndicate of CNG drivers, all of whom reportedly gang-raped a women, in Maheshkhali upazila of Cox's Bazar.

Two Union Parishad members were also arrested for covering up the incident. 

Police produced the arrestees before a court on Saturday afternoon, and sought a five-day remand for interrogation.

The arrestees are: UP members Liakat Ali and Khotiza Begum, and rape suspect Monu Mia, confirmed Maheshkhali police station OC Provash Chandra Dhar.

The woman filed a case with the police station on Friday accusing 14 people including Amir Salam, Enia, Adalat Kha, and Osman Gani.

According to the case statement, on Sunday evening, the woman after her shift at work, boarded a three-wheeler near Badarkhali bus station. On her way, the driver called some of his associates to wait at Chaliatali bus station. 

Three men boarded the three-wheeler in Chaliatali area, and the vehicle changed its course. The men abducted her to a nearby hill in Shaplapur area, where more men in three wheelers were waiting.

At least 14 to 15 men took the woman to the hilltop, and gang-raped her throughout the night, and at one point she lost consciousness. 

Next day, the woman reached UP member Shamima Akhter's residence, and disclosed the incident to her.

Shamima Akhter said local influential people were trying to cover up the incident for some time.
