Massive fire in Rangamati

Despite widespread reports of damage, no casualties have been reported yet

At least 70 houses, shops and furniture factories have been gutted by a massive fire in Langadu upazila of Rangamati. 

The incident occurred at Dhakaiya Tila in Mainimukh Bazar area early hours of Wednesday.

Witnesses told Dhaka Tribune that the fire ignited in a house and spread across the area. Locals and law enforcement agencies rushed to the spot but could not douse the fire.

Later, fire service units from Dighinala upazila from Khagrachhari reached the area and brought the fire under control in three hours.

 No casualties have been reported yet.

Upazila Nirbahi Officer of Langadu upazila, Probir Kumar Rai, said: “More than 70 houses are damaged in the fire and around 150 families are affected. The damage is estimated to be worth more than Tk1 crore.”

“The fire was probably caused by an electrical short circuit,” the officer added.

The Langadu Union Parishad Vice Chairman and General Secretary of Mainimukh Bazar Businessman Welfare Association, Mir Sirajul Islam Jhantu, said: “Conducting a primary investigating, the union parishad has made a list of the families affected and the amount of damage caused.”
