Lightning bolts of a thunderstorm killed three farmers, one fisherman and a seventh grader
At least seven people have died in separate incidents of lightning strikes in three districts on Friday.
In Habiganj, a college student was killed when lightning struck him in the Chunarughat upazila of the district.
The victim was identified as Sujon Miah, 18, son of Shafiq Miah, a resident of the Alinagar village of the upazila. He was an HSC student of Gazipur High School and College.
According to locals, Sujon was fishing in his neighbourhood when a thunderbolt struck him, leaving him critically injured. Locals rushed him to the Habiganj Modern District Sadar Hospital, where doctors pronounced him dead.
In Netrakona, a young man was killed as lightning struck him while fishing in the Lakshmipur village of the Khaliajuri upazila on Friday morning. The deceased was identified as Rafiqul Islam, 30, son of Abdur Rashid of the Lakshmipur village.
Khaliajuri police station OC ATM Mahmudul Haque said a thunderbolt hit Rafiq while he was fishing in a water body. An unnatural death case has been filed in this regard, he said.
In Pabna, five people, including a minor schoolgirl, died in separate incidents of lightning strikes on Friday afternoon.
The deceased were identified as: Abdul Mannan, 50, Abdus Salam, 49, and Ansar Mallik, 47, all from the Agbagshoa village in the Bera upazila; Nasima Khatun, 12, in Char-buramara village of the same upazila and Shamim Ahmed, 32, of the Noubaria Maddhya-para village in the Bhangura upazila.
In the Bera upazila, four farmers were harvesting peanuts in the char area of the Agbagshoa village when a lightning bolt hit them. The doctor-on-duty declared Abdul, Salam and Ansar dead after all of them were taken to the Upazila Health Complex," said Officer-in-Charge Shaahid Mahmud of Bera police station.
Ershad Molla, 26, is still receiving treatment in the hospital, the OC added.
Police sources confirmed another death of the seventh grader Nasima in the Char-buramara village when she was also harvesting peanuts.
In the Bhangura upazila, Shamim went to fishing with a current net in the Atharobaria bil (marsh) and was struck by lightning in the thunderstorm. Locals rescued the severely injured Shamim to a local hospital where the duty doctor declared him dead, confirmed OC Masud Rana of Bhangura police station.
