Three members of the police, including two assistant sub-inspectors (ASI) and a constable, have been arrested in a case filed over the illegal possession of seized gold bars in Sharsha upazila of Jessore.
The arrestees, ASI Tabibur Rahman, 32, ASI Ranjan Kumar Moitri, 37, and Constable Tushar Sarker, 28, are officers from Bagachra Police Investigation Centre.
The three accused were produced before the court of Senior Judicial Magistrate Manjurul Islam, who sent them to jail on Tuesday.
The policemen were arrested on Sunday. Later, a case was filed against them on Monday.
Sharsha police station Sub-inspector Abul Hossain,who is also the plaintiff in the case, said: “On Sunday evening, the three police officials seized eight gold bars from illegal gold traders named Sajedur and Aktarul. With an intention of keeping the gold bars for themselves, they released the criminals.
“However, the higher authorities of district police came to know of the matter and directed the Sharsha police to investigate. Upon investigation, they recovered the gold bars from ASI Tabibur Rahman’s possession.”
The gold bars weigh around 86 bhori (about 1kg), which has a market price of Tk40 lakh.
A case was also filed against Sajedur and Aktarul for illegally trading in gold, he added.
